About Kiss Me, Captain

Emily transferred to Lakeview University for one reason: a scholarship to a figure skating program that could launch her to Nationals. She came for the ice, the opportunity, and the eight hundred miles of distance from her mother's endless attempts to set her up with "nice boys." She didn't come for Madison Reyes.

She was her best friend once—inseparable from ages eight to twelve, the kind of friendship that felt permanent. Then Maddie's family moved away, the letters stopped, and Emily buried that loss somewhere she didn't have to look at it. The Maddie waiting for her at Lakeview isn't the girl she remembers. This Maddie is polished, untouchable, and team captain—and she greets Emily with a smile and words sharp enough to cut.

Their hatred curdles into charged glances, dangerous games, and encounters that leave Emily questioning everything she thought she knew about herself and her sexuality.

With Nationals approaching, scholarships on the line, and a vicious social hierarchy ready to destroy them both, Emily and Maddie must decide what matters more: the walls they've built to survive, or the terrifying possibility that the person who threatens everything might also be the only one who truly sees them.

Characters

Character Insights

Character Insight

Who is Victoria Hughes, and what does she want from Maddie?

Victoria Hughes is a former Olympic silver medalist who heads the Regional Selection Committee. She comes into Maddie's life through her father, David Reyes. What she plainly wants is for Maddie to leave Lakeview, which also means leaving Emily, and she frames the transfer as a fresh start and as mentorship. Her deeper motive stays hidden.

Character Insight

Why doesn't Emily give up on Maddie?

Emily keeps telling Maddie she can see the real girl underneath. The lost letters show both of them felt abandoned, so Maddie's coldness reads differently once that comes out. Emily's loyalty still has a condition, though. She walks away once when Maddie stays silent, and she keeps asking Maddie to stop hiding and be brave.

Character Insight

Is Maddie's father, David Reyes, the villain of Kiss Me, Captain?

Up to chapter 110, David Reyes puts more pressure on Maddie than anyone else in her story, but the book hasn't confirmed he's a villain. He condemns her relationship and cuts off her tuition. Then he comes back with apologies, offers of help and a plan to move her to Denver. The book still hasn't shown whether his change is sincere or strategic.

Character Insight

Why does Maddie keep running from Emily in Kiss Me, Captain?

For Maddie, closeness has always come at a price. Her letters went unanswered when she was thirteen, bullying taught her to hide, and her father's love came with conditions. Emily insists the real Maddie is still there under the act. So whenever being seen feels dangerous, Maddie leaves first, before anyone can leave her, judge her or cut her off again.

Character Insight

Is Maddie Reyes a bully or a victim in Kiss Me, Captain?

She's both, and it happened in that order. Maddie Reyes was tormented as a kid for being poor, then deliberately made herself cruel so it couldn't happen again. At Lakeview she threatens Emily and lets her friends torment her too. The book never lets the old wound excuse that. Up to chapter 30, her arc is about choosing to stop.

Character Insight

Why does Maddie keep her relationship with Emily a secret?

Maddie hides her relationship with Emily to protect what she built to survive: a fake rich-girl persona, a staged romance with Derek, and the straight daughter her parents believe in. At chapter 50 she names rumors, investigators and her career as her reasons. Underneath is an older fear that wanting someone openly gives them a weapon.

Character Insight

Why does Maddie pretend not to know Emily in Kiss Me, Captain?

The story never says it outright, but it strongly suggests two reasons. Emily is the one person at Lakeview University who can prove Maddie's rich-girl persona is fake. Maddie also spent years believing Emily ignored her childhood letters, including one that confessed love. Denying Emily most likely protects the lie and lets Maddie reject her first.

Fan Facts

Fan Fact

How does Kiss Me, Captain end?

We won't spoil the ending, but here's what the final stretch is fighting over. By chapter 121, Maddie has chosen to transfer and Emily is skating through heartbreak. Then Emily learns that Victoria Hughes, the woman arranging Maddie's transfer, will be head judge at their next major competition. The book answers the rest from chapter 121.

Fan Fact

Why does Maddie break up with Emily in Kiss Me, Captain?

Maddie breaks up with Emily by text in chapter 118. She says she's staying home, transferring, and that they aren't good for each other. Behind it are exhaustion, Coach's warning that the relationship was hurting their skating, unfair scores at Regionals, and steady pressure from her father and Victoria Hughes to start fresh somewhere else.

Fan Fact

Does Maddie come out to her parents in Kiss Me, Captain?

Yes. In chapter 64, Maddie sits down with her parents at a park picnic table and tells them she's gay and in love with Emily. It goes badly. Her father, David Reyes, calls it confusion and a sin and makes her skating and schooling depend on ending the relationship. Her mother, Hanna, says she loves her but follows him.

Fan Fact

Who sabotaged Maddie's skates in Kiss Me, Captain?

Carol Martinez sabotaged Maddie's skates. In chapter 49, investigator Madeline Foster reports that Carol confessed to tampering with them. Three girls now face criminal charges, and the case is closed. Carol belonged to Jenna Caldwell's circle and had been cut from the Nationals roster shortly before the competition where Maddie fell.

Fan Fact

Why did Emily and Maddie stop writing to each other in Kiss Me, Captain?

Neither of them chose to stop. Maddie kept writing after her family moved, but her letters went to Emily's old house on Maple Street. Weeks after Maddie left, Emily's family had moved to an apartment on Cedar following her parents' divorce, so the letters never reached Emily. Each girl believed the other had forgotten her.

How Kiss Me, Captain Turns a Lost Friendship Into a Rivalry

Kiss Me, Captain builds the rivalry out of what the friendship left behind. Emily and Maddie fight with details only a childhood best friend would know. The ice keeps score for them in public. Old games and routines keep surfacing as a second, softer language, and through chapter 30 the rivalry slowly turns into a shared title rather than a contest.

What Kiss Me, Captain Is Really About: Performing Versus Being Seen

Under the enemies-to-lovers rivalry, Kiss Me, Captain is about performance. Both girls play roles to get through Lakeview. Maddie fakes wealth and a boyfriend, and Emily calls her feelings an experiment. The ice is the one place where faking doesn't work, and through chapter 50 the story asks what it costs to stop acting and be seen.
