Jenna Caldwell in Kiss Me, Captain

Updated: Covers chapters 1–57. No spoilers beyond that.

Jenna Caldwell is a Lakeview University skater and a leading voice in Maddie Reyes's social circle. Maddie's rich-girl act is performed for her, and she's also the one who tears it apart. Her contempt for scholarship student Emily Harper escalates from insults to a physical assault, which makes her the story's main antagonist through chapter 57.

Maddie's audience, then her exposer

Jenna first appears beside Maddie. When Emily asks out loud whether Maddie's father has switched careers, Maddie has to make up a story on the spot so Jenna won't catch on. Later, Maddie invents Maldives investment plans over dinner with Jenna and Caroline. Much of Maddie's made-up wealth is staged for Jenna's benefit.

That role flips as Jenna starts noticing things. She visits the dorm, sees Emily living in what Maddie called a private single her father paid for, and spots the lie right away. At morning practice, with Carol and Mary beside her, she mocks Maddie for taking in a less fortunate roommate. Later she tells the team that Maddie's father runs an auto repair shop.

Jenna is the reason Maddie's persona is dangerous to keep up. As long as Jenna believes the act, it protects Maddie. Once she starts pulling at it, it falls apart in front of everyone.

What seems to drive her

Jenna's attacks keep coming back to money and status. She mocks Emily's clothes and background at a party, and with Carol and Sophie she calls Emily a scholarship kid who doesn't belong on the team. She even turns Emily's slashed gear into a joke about her scholarship.

The book doesn't let readers into Jenna's head. Most of what we learn about her motives comes from Maddie, who tells investigators and her father that Jenna resented her being made captain and paired with Emily. Maddie offers that account while deliberately keeping the deeper reasons vague, so readers should take it as one possible explanation, not the full truth.

Jenna also picks up on what's happening between the two rivals early. At regionals she teases Maddie for staring at Emily and suggests the interest is personal. That sharp eye for weak spots is what makes her dangerous.

Her circle and her targets

Jenna seldom acts alone. Carol Martinez and Sophie Chen are with her when she taunts Emily, and Carol and Mary are there when she mocks Maddie. Chris Nakamura warns Emily that Jenna's harassment has turned into gear sabotage and should be reported.

Emily doesn't let Jenna push her around. She answers the party insult with a remark about Jenna's skating that leaves Jenna humiliated. She challenges Jenna to a skate-off, and she openly accuses Jenna of slashing her bag after seeing her with a box cutter. Emily also says Jenna confronted her in a parking lot with threats dressed up as warnings. Maddie later admits she saw Jenna near Emily's bag and said nothing.

From cruelty to consequences

The harassment peaks two weeks before Nationals. Jenna, Carol and Sophie corner Emily in the showers, turn the water scalding hot and shove her into the tile wall. Maddie finally steps in and orders them out, threatening to report them to Coach, the Dean, the police and their parents.

After that, things catch up with Jenna fast. Coach Marquette removes her, Carol and Sophie from the Nationals roster and puts their scholarships under review. A university panel later expels all three and sends the case to local police. Jenna, who brings a lawyer to the hearing, doesn't back down. As security walks her out, she leans toward Maddie and warns that now everyone will know and things have gotten worse for her.

Jenna doesn't soften, apologize or turn out to have another side up to this point. Her arc is a steady escalation, from comments to exposure to violence, and losing her place at Lakeview makes her more of a threat to Maddie's secrets, not less.

Jenna Caldwell is the friend Maddie's lies were told to and the bully who turns every weak spot she finds into a weapon.

Start at chapter 3 to watch Maddie keep up her act in front of Jenna for the first time.
