Ava Thompson in Kiss Me, Captain
Updated: Covers chapters 1–50. No spoilers beyond that.
Ava Thompson is Emily Harper's teammate and her first friend at Lakeview University. On Emily's first day, Ava warns her about captain Maddie Reyes. She keeps Emily company when the team freezes her out, and later she's the one who asks Emily straight out whether she and Maddie are in love.
The first friendly face at Lakeview
Ava Thompson is the first person who makes room for Emily at Lakeview University. In chapter 1 she introduces the new transfer to the figure skating team and warns her that the captain, Maddie, is cold and manipulative. Emily gets this warning before she recognizes Maddie as the best friend she lost years ago.
The timing makes Ava a guide. She knows how the team works from the inside, but she isn't one of the girls around Maddie, the ones who hide Emily's bag and sneer at scholarship athletes on her first day. That gives readers their first look at who holds power on the team, and it tells us early that Emily won't be completely alone.
Company without confessions
After that first hostile practice, Ava invites Emily to dinner. Emily tells her only a vague version of the past: she and Maddie knew each other once and lost touch when Maddie moved. Later, on the bus home from the first away competition, Emily closes her eyes to dodge Chris Nakamura and lets Ava deal with him. When Coach Marquette and Ava both notice Emily's form slipping, Emily blames fatigue and makes a weak excuse about food.
Emily leans on Ava for company, cover and a seat at dinner, but she keeps her real story to herself. Ava notices more than Emily admits, and she doesn't push. That patience shapes the whole friendship: Ava stays close enough to see what's happening and waits until Emily is ready to say it.
The night before Emily skates alone
At Nationals, after Maddie's fall, Emily is woken late at night and finds Ava sitting outside her door. In the hallway Emily describes the injury and how helpless she felt at the rink. She admits she doesn't know how to skate without Maddie pushing her. Ava tells her to skate well for both of them, and Emily takes that to heart. Then Ava asks directly whether Emily and Maddie are in love.
Emily can't answer. She doesn't know what to call something that feels like more than friendship or rivalry. Ava tells her she doesn't need to define it, that she'll support her either way, and that the relationship belongs to Emily alone.
This is where Ava matters most. She's the first person to ask the question out loud, and she asks it with no strings attached. Around Emily, being seen usually means being judged or exposed. Ava's question is the rare one that's safe to leave unanswered.
From warning to witness
On the morning of Maddie's surgery, Ava shows up at the hospital with coffee while Emily waits. She tells Emily she looks at Maddie the way people in love do. This time she isn't asking.
Ava doesn't so much change as move to the center. In chapter 1 she warns Emily away from Maddie. By chapter 47 she's naming what Emily feels for her. So far the story tells us little about Ava's own life on or off the ice, so we mostly know her through how she shows up for Emily, and she shows up at exactly the moments that count.
Ava is the friend who first warns Emily away from Maddie and later becomes the first to say out loud that Emily loves her.
Start with chapter 1 to meet Ava on Emily's first day at the Lakeview rink, just before an old face changes everything.
