How does Kiss Me, Captain end?

Updated: Covers chapters 1–121. No spoilers beyond that.

Short answer

We won't spoil the ending, but here's what the final stretch is fighting over. By chapter 121, Maddie has chosen to transfer and Emily is skating through heartbreak. Then Emily learns that Victoria Hughes, the woman arranging Maddie's transfer, will be head judge at their next major competition. The book answers the rest from chapter 121.

Where things stand going into the final arc

When the final stretch opens, Emily and Maddie are further apart than they've been in a long time. From her parents' house, Maddie texts Emily that she's staying home, transferring, and that the two of them aren't good for each other. Then she turns off her phone. Emily drives over to fight for them, and Maddie tells her to her face that the transfer is happening and that Victoria is taking care of the paperwork. She asks Emily to let her go.

Before Maddie left, Emily wanted the two of them to push back against the unfair judging together, by filing complaints and going public. Maddie said she was too tired to keep fighting. So the ending isn't only about a breakup. It's also about whether either of them still thinks the fight is worth it.

Why Victoria Hughes raises the stakes

Chapter 121 ends with news that changes everything ahead: Victoria Hughes has been named head judge for the next major competition. This is the same Victoria who offered Maddie a spot at another program as a fresh start and who is now handling her transfer.

That's a big reason readers keep asking how it all ends. The woman pulling Maddie away from Lakeview will now be scoring the skaters Maddie leaves behind, Emily included. Whatever happens next on the ice will happen in front of someone with a clear stake in where Maddie ends up.

Emily on the ice, running on anger

Back at the rink, Emily shows up early and trains hard, putting all her hurt into her jumps and spins. Coach Marquette pushes back. She tells Emily that skating is about control, not punishment, and warns that skating angry could get her hurt. Ava and Chris keep checking on her, and Emily keeps telling them she's fine.

Emily now has to compete in front of Victoria while she's still raw, and her coach has already warned her she's courting injury. How she handles that pressure is one of the big questions the last chapters take on.

What's left unresolved

Neither of them is at peace with the split. After Emily drives away, David tells Maddie she made the right choice, but Maddie privately regrets it. Alone in her dorm, Emily breaks down over a photo of Maddie that she can't bring herself to delete.

That leaves the ending with several big questions: whether the transfer goes through, what Victoria judging means for the team, and whether these two can find their way back to each other. The book answers them in the chapters after 121, and we'll leave that to the book.

The takeaway

Going into the final arc, Maddie is set to transfer, Emily is skating on anger, and Victoria Hughes will judge their next competition, so how it all turns out is something you'll need to read for yourself.

How Kiss Me, Captain Turns a Lost Friendship Into a Rivalry

Kiss Me, Captain builds the rivalry out of what the friendship left behind. Emily and Maddie fight with details only a childhood best friend would know. The ice keeps score for them in public. Old games and routines keep surfacing as a second, softer language, and through chapter 30 the rivalry slowly turns into a shared title rather than a contest.

Author Note

What Kiss Me, Captain Is Really About: Performing Versus Being Seen

Under the enemies-to-lovers rivalry, Kiss Me, Captain is about performance. Both girls play roles to get through Lakeview. Maddie fakes wealth and a boyfriend, and Emily calls her feelings an experiment. The ice is the one place where faking doesn't work, and through chapter 50 the story asks what it costs to stop acting and be seen.

Fan Fact

Why does Maddie break up with Emily in Kiss Me, Captain?

Maddie breaks up with Emily by text in chapter 118. She says she's staying home, transferring, and that they aren't good for each other. Behind it are exhaustion, Coach's warning that the relationship was hurting their skating, unfair scores at Regionals, and steady pressure from her father and Victoria Hughes to start fresh somewhere else.

Fan Fact

Does Maddie come out to her parents in Kiss Me, Captain?

Yes. In chapter 64, Maddie sits down with her parents at a park picnic table and tells them she's gay and in love with Emily. It goes badly. Her father, David Reyes, calls it confusion and a sin and makes her skating and schooling depend on ending the relationship. Her mother, Hanna, says she loves her but follows him.

Fan Fact

Who sabotaged Maddie's skates in Kiss Me, Captain?

Carol Martinez sabotaged Maddie's skates. In chapter 49, investigator Madeline Foster reports that Carol confessed to tampering with them. Three girls now face criminal charges, and the case is closed. Carol belonged to Jenna Caldwell's circle and had been cut from the Nationals roster shortly before the competition where Maddie fell.
